Subject: 5140 Maxxum Tachometer

Northwest Ohio
Have a 5140 Maxxum, with analog (dial-type ) tach ... not the fancier digital readout.
Tach has started working intermittently ... when it works, the readings seem to correlate with engine throttle. When it doesn't work, it reads zero. Seems like it has a mind of its own.
Do these still have a mechanical cable connecting engine to tach (like in the old days) ... or is does this convert RPM's to some type of electrical signal which feeds the dash, where the dash converts it back from electrical signal to mechanical dial?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
