Calcerous soils tie up phosphate.
I wouldn't think he'd be taking a yield hit banding 40 in 7.5 spacing. Guys do 35 all the time with 10" space and there yields have been fantastic approaching 50.
Could band 100 pounds map with drill 7.5 spaced in fall then plant in spring. Play a little catchup that way.
