Subject: RE: Gerber Growers ?

Glenwood, Mn

haselmanag - 11/17/2014 17:07 Most all of the Specialty veggie growers all use the same software or similar software program that the processor or choices that can has each field, lot number, variety, etc information. Many times it goes much more in depth to include all passes made across that field. Most utilize one of many software record keeping products like land db or farmworks or something similar that can track all aspects of the farm. In a lot of cases the food processor has a hired person to assist or enter all the farmers data if needed to do so. It really not all that hard to keep track where the veggie crop or specialty crop came from since most are grown on contract anyways.

AgCode in Glenwood MN does exactly that.  They provide software for tracking produce from seed to bottle, can, jar etc.   Very sophisticated.  They originally started out doing tracking for seed corn breeders and branched out from there.  Something like 70% of the wine (by volume) produced in Napa is tracked using their software to some extent.

The president of the company was my high school principal.  Sounds weird right? Not really.  He took the brightest minds from my generation and put them to work for him.  What better way to know how intelligent someone is than that?  He's no dummy.

So is it possible?  Yes.  Is it used on a daily basis?  Yes.  The price of the software is a drop in the bucket compared to doing a total "lot" recall because of some bad product and not knowing it's origins.
