Subject: RE: installing tile

iseedit: are you sure you meant what you just said? Your statement that depth is more important than grade is false. If one installs a tile at a consistent depth of 3' deep, what happens when the ground surface has a hump? You get a hump in your tile. The tile MUST be installed deeper through the hump to maintain adequate cover on the other side of the hump and to maintain a consistent grade through the run so that water will flow.

Your "hitting a hard spot and the tile comes up 2 inches" example is a case in point: as long as the grade does not reverse, so what? As long as you still have adequate cover, just maintain the grade forward from that point, and the run will still work just fine.

For a tile to function properly without silting in, the GRADE must be consistent, regardless of the depth of the tile. Most properly installed tile runs will vary in depth quite drastically unless it is in "table-top-flat" country.

It continually amazes me how many people seem to think that water can run uphill....
