Subject: RE: What Steering Valve

Middlesex County, Ontario
A bang-bang valve (thats the correct technical name) is basically on or off with no in between. If you are driving in a straight line you need small corrections, so the bang bang valves usually don't put through a lot of flow (otherwise they would have a tendency to drastically overcorrect). Since they don't put through a lot of flow they are not very good at line acquisition (coming off a headland). They generally take a little more to fine tune through your monitor. Perfectly tune a bang-bang for 5 mph and speed up to 8 mph and sometimes they don't work so perfectly anymore, requiring further tuning. You are a farmer so you know surging hydraulics is not always a good thing. It works ok in an autosteer application but its not fantastic.

The Trimble valve is a proportional valve similar to your tractor remote. It can give 0 flow, full flow, half flow, and everywhere in between. They can put through small amount of flow for staying on the line, lots of flow for line acquisition, and do all these things very smoothly.
