WC IA | Poncho 1250 and Cruiser 1250 were both oversold as treatments for rootworm control and neither have shown very effective in testing. In ISU studies from 2003-2005, Poncho 1250 cut rootworm damage from 2.0 down to .98 (nodal injury scores). Aztec and Force cut it from 2.0 down to .24-.35. YieldGard Rootworm cut damage to .03. Capture is only slightly better than Poncho 1250. If it's rootworms you are trying to control, you are far better off with something like SmartStax instead of high rates of Cruiser or Poncho. If you already have a rootworm infestation, SmartStax is not your answer; you'll probably need a combination of rotation followed by insecticide with SmartStax.
Pioneer high rate is Poncho 1250. It may or may not include Poncho Votivo which is a biological corn nematode treatment. Nematodes are tough critters to figure out. Maybe you have them. Maybe you don't. Votivo creates a natural barrier around the seed that nematodes don't like. It doesn't kill them like Avicta does (a non-biological).
The best use for Poncho 1250, in my book, is if you have wireworm issues or chinch bugs (in the south).
To answer your question... probably Poncho 1250 plus Votivo is the "high treat". If you don't have wireworms or chinch bugs, you probably don't need Poncho 1250. If you don't have corn nematodes, you probably don't need the Votivo.
High rates of treatment won't hurt anything. but it may introduce some planting problems requiring lots of talc and/or graphite to get through the planter. | |
