According to the guys at Pittsburgh Power, and they are experts on the Big Cam engines, you want to run those engines at 1800+ when in a hard pull. It has to do with the shock load on the push rods for the injectors and getting that piston out of TDC so it doesn't melt. You need a Pyrometer and you will see where the exhaust temps spike at under 1600 rpms and a good load... not enough incoming air to cool the pistons.
