Ridgway, IL | My girlfriend and I were checking cattle last night... She snapped this pic of them coming to see if I had a treat.
This is the field with arg and vol soybeans. The calves have been there 2 weeks. It's an 80 ac divided in half. They have grazed about 4 inches off the average height of the ryegrass. It's now 8-10" tall.
The adjoining 40ac is averaging 14-16" tall. When should I move them to the fresh grass? The calves seem satisfied. I have read some stuff saying graze to 4" then rotate, but that seems awful short to me. I want to graze till February, so I'm guessing growth will slow down when it gets cold.
Is there an advantage to grazing short? Stimulate re growth or somthing? Or does it do better to move them somewhat frequently? I've also read some things saying a 30 day rest period is minimum to really get the advantage of rotational grazing...
But that was geared more to summer pastures.
