Great Lakes State | It really depends on what type of user you are.
The main thing I like about SSD is the boot time is fast.
I only have them in my Folding servers and they boot real fast.
If you are just a basic user: surf the web, stream videos, check e-mail then an SSD is just a waste of money since all you will get is faster boot time.
There are drawbacks to SSD:
Price per GB
SSD is Flash memory that has a limited amount of write times.
If an SSD dies so does all your data with no chance to recover unlike a platter drive.
Advantages are:
Low power draw (laptop = longer batt life)
Won't damage the drive from a fall (Big plus for a laptop)
SSD makes no noise when running.
An SSD wins in the laptop category.
That said I have been looking for a good price on a large SSD because I have an app that uses the drive for part of its operation and faster write/read times will speed things up.
I am willing to take the shorter life for the time saved in this application.
I have missed covering a whole lot of things but I don't have the time right now to get into controller types, TRIM etc.
