Then I'm not sure that you're burning your battery that much faster than I'd expect. I spend most of my day in a 2 to 3 bar coverage area and am doing only a little better than you are. I have push notifications/updates turned off, the screen dimmed back a bit, and no Bluetooth or GPS enabled. I disable WiFi when I get away from hotspots that I use.
