When we got a bigger TV for the living room I took the old one (flat screen, can't tell l you if LED or plasma or what.  It's 20+ inches and not a CRT) up to my office and set it back on the corner of the desk.  I bought a video AB switch and hooked it up to my computer.  I use the remote to change inputs, push the AB switch and my computer display is switched to it.  IT'S GREAT! my bifocals are getting to the point I have to work to see the little display, but on the TV I can sit back and enjoy computing again. It took a little adjusting resolution and aspect until I was happy with it.

I don't do the detail work you are talking about, but for me it works great.
