Does it happen all the time or is it worse after a big rain? Our old house, the tight clay soils were too tight for the water to get away if there was a big rain, and water would run backwards and fill the tank and it had to be pumped out, or wait about 2-3 days without using much water.

More likely you have some sort of obstruction like tree roots or something plugging your system. Is there a place where you can take a lid off and look down with a flashlight, maybe you can see if it's really full or if not something might be wrong with your system.

Good luck, septic trouble is no fun at all.
