I try to buy cows weighing 1000 to 1400 lb however, will consider buying cows weighing 1400 to 1600 lb but will only pay max $/hd for a 1400 lb cow. In other words, I want the extra lbs above 1400 to be free. Also if cow is fat, will discount at least 7-8 cents as the fat cows usually loose more weight than a medium to thin fleshed cow.
Rarely do I buy a cow under 1000 lb as their kill value is discounted due to a light carcass while their selling prices as a bred rarely get low enough to work in my program.
Seems most buyers don't discount the light wt bred cows enough and the heavy wt cows aren't bid up as much as their extra weight is worth. For this reason most barns in my area will weigh the heavy wt bred cows as they have learned they bring more total $$ that way.
FWIW-I would pay up to $1.20/lb for a 3rd (6,7,8 mo)period cow so it sounds like your on the money in my book. You should have a nice profit when sold next year.
