Check to see that your oil cooler is not plugged, and your transmission vent is not blocked. Overheated oil would cause the performance issues you noted and can lead to an increase in tank volume due to expansion.

I use an old worn out JD 490E excavator from time to time. When the oil gets too hot, the machine will move slow, chatter/studder, and run over relief more frequently. I think the oil gets a lot of air dissolved in it as well when it gets hot.

A plugged vent can cause the transmission case to become pressurized and force oil back up through the filler or dipstick tube if either enter the case below the fluid line. Had that happen on my CX90, prior owner replaced the vent with a bolt and the trans pressure would push oil out the dipstick tube.
