It used to break down. However since 2011 we have had very cold and very dry winters with no snow cover. Now it just builds up on top of the ground and takes about three years to break down. This spring I had an irrigated field that had stover from 2013 2012 and 2010 the soybean stubble from 2011 had broken down. I drilled through 3 inches of trash this spring.
