I know a couple of young guys working in ND and they work 16-18 hours a day, 7 on and then 2 off. No time for anything else and their employers do not hire part timers.

Yeah, I've known a lot of oil patch workers, & part-time is not in the vocabulary...out of all those guys, there's one old fart who was smart & tough enough to hang on to some money, he's about 80, was a driller all his working life, has the missing fingers to prove it, & started farming & running race horses when he retired. Bought & sold several farms, & he's comfortable...The norm, unfortunately, is to make the big bucks, blow it on toys & partying, then when the patch slows down, everything's gone, including the marriage...sounds cynical, I know, but that's what I've seen happen...if you're smart about it, you can come out ahead, but a lot don't...

THAT IS THE TRUTH THROUGH AND THROUGH!!!!
I have seen that myself, an old rig hand once told me "when work is good you can eat steak everyday and when the rig is stacked you cant eat hotdogs or afford to eat heat it up"
