Subject: RE: how long to cut haylage for the silo

My ruminant nutritionist always told me the long pieces ( over 3-4" long)are not as important to the cow as once thought. They inhibit good packing when filling and cause more problems getting it out of the silo.

The best thing to do is take a sample of your forage and run it trough a Penn state shaker box to see how much is in each set of screens.

I fed an all haylage diet for years and never fed any long stem hay with no fat test depression etc.
