West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge | What is scary about Brazilians wanting to sell beef instead of non value added grains? I say this from the point of view of a beef and grain farmer.
From a grain perspective, that means less grain being exported by Brazil, therefore less competition, and the fact that the Chinese want to eat beef, the least efficient converter of protein, bodes well for future demand of grains. From a beef perspective, I want China to consume as much beef as possible, regardless of where it comes from, it is increased demand, the potential size of that market is beyond comprehension. No one here wants to raise beef, it is inevitable that someone else will, and will do it cheaper. We need someone to produce beef, or risk pricing ourselves right out of the market, and have a generation of consumers who don't even consider beef. Being SA, it will likely be grass fed beef anyways, so it may not consume as much grain, but it will still consume a lot of acres that either are, or were going to be grain.
And supposedly, many importers want our grain fed beef as opposed to grass fed.
