I understand where you are coming from - just trying to lighten your day.  Heli-coil may work

I rebuilt my hypro pump a while back (bearings and seal) and when I put the drain plug in, the threads were stripped.  I tapped it out to 1/4" NPT and went about my business but you have more at stake than I had.  Good luck.
