Unless someone made a change to your '86, our 886 had the muffler under the hood.
I recall the advertising of the day touting the muffler under the hood.
I think that had IH managed a synchronized with power shift transmission in the '86 series closer to the John Deere Quad Range they may have remained solvent a while longer. Dressing that rear end in a new skirt really didn't help much.
