backhoes are quite a bit more versatile, faster to move around in the field, you can road them, etc...

excavators can move more dirt typically. excavator will require some sort of trailer to haul from site to site. crawlers move slow to cross a large field.

we went through this dilemma last year. ended up buying a 32k lb excavator and are very happy. $5-10k might be a tight window, perhaps you can extend it out to $15-17k? if so, I would recommend the excavator. it will move a heck of a lot more dirt, stone, tree than most backhoes will in less time. if you a significant amount of work to do and this won't just be a one time project sort of thing, an excavator will be a good purchase. if you can't extend the purchase window, you may want to start with a backhoe with future upgrades in mind.

in my mind mini excavators are not very practical on the farm for most operations. they will work, but you might as well buy a backhoe because that's about the same performance level. backhoe is easier to move around the site and can travel on the road.
