Subject: RE: Disk Ripper behind cotton?

Eastern Arkansas
I have found t's hard to do anything in the fall with the stalks up and get it smooth and trash free enough to sow anything. The problem with stalks right after harvest is they are still tough and it is hard to chop them up. I have a JD 2700 mulch ripper that I run over standing stalks that does a decent job but probably leaves 20% of the stalks still standing.

The best thing I have found for standing stalks besides a flail mower is a john deere vertical tillage tool. Actually running one right behind the 2700 that was pulled in standing stalks does a great job and would leave a great seedbed for planting wheat, it chops and buries most of the residue.

Most of the tools that rip and bury the stalks, like the Bingham brothers rig, don't chop them but just bury them pretty much whole. Everyone in this area that bought one have taken the attachments off and run them as a paratill because they had trouble getting them to perform right.
