just a tish NE of central ND | My sons springer spaniel gets excited to go fetch some pheasants when the kids light up fireworks. He can figure out why when the banging goes on there is never a falling bird to retrieve. Same for thunder. When it thunders he used to come to the door and bet to go fetch, bring a ball or bone or stick or whatever.
Our own border collie got shot at and scared home from a neighbor and would run for cover in thunder. If you got out of a pickup during a storm and it thundered you got hit by a flying dog jumping in for cover even though we have never taken her into a vehicle. Had a heck of a time removing her.
We never did break her from that habit. It ruined her in a way. Even a backfiring truck a quarter mile away on the road made her hide.
