Subject: RE: Cotton - optimal row spacing

Where are you located? Is cotton being grown there already? Will the planters plant cotton on both irrigated and dry land? When is your rainy season? When is your dry season? What insects will you have to control? Do you have access to BT and RR varieties of cotton seed? Will you use cotton pickers or cotton strippers for harvest? What are your rotational crops?

In our area of Texas cotton is grown on both dry land and irrigated. Row spacings used are 40", 38", 36", 32" and 30". All have been successful. In the dry land areas FibreMax orka leaf varieties are the most popular (originated in Australia I believe). The irrigated farms favor DPL and Stoneville varieties. Cotton which is expected to be harvested by strippers are usually planted at a little higher population rate. Cotton plants spaced 3 to 6 inches apart are not unusual on the farms here. Our area is now in it's second year of a boll weivil eradication program. These programs have been successful across the USA in eliminating this very destructive pest. Aphids, thrips, stink bugs and white fly are also threats to our crops. The BT cotton varieties are successful in controling worms by and large. The boll weivil is currently our biggest threat to successful crops.

Please tell us more about your area.
