I bet a 96 does have plastic slides. The plastic pieces are about .060" thick and not visible during normal operating. If you take out the door, you will see the door has been sitting on the plastic strips. The rust jacking of the gear rack is the main culprit. It will take about an afternoon the first time you fix it. Then, about every 5 years. The doors may be riveted. The rivets should be replaced with flathead, countersunk bolts. The bolts aren't going to come apart in 5 years, anyway.
