I think the cage is the assembly that holds the clutches and planatary gears.

That is what the JD mechanics called it.

We had trouble with ours starting at about 150 hours.

By the time we got to 22 years old we could get about 2 years out of each rebuild.

Woke up one morning and decided we needed to find a different dealership to look at it.

They said it needed updated to the 50 series cage, we had been told several rebuilds before that it was updated.

That was about the year 2000, we have not had any problems with the 2 speed since.
