Had the outer bearing fail on an 8970 last year, they are only lubed with grease, kind of a funny setup. Anyway if your lucky maybe it's only the bearings in the axle tube. Did you pull the drain plug to see if there are any filings. You will probably have to pull the whole axle to do bearings if it's like the 8970. A lot of work but not too complicated.
