Southwest Ontario | Rats are too "smart" for that. Anything new that is introduced to them, they will watch what happens to the first few that eat it. If those first few die immediately, the rest won't go near it.
A better approach is to feed them something safe (I use sunflower seed) for a week or two. Do Not get impatient during the safe food stage. then introduce (legal) poison. I mix liquid rozol into sunflower seed. Never let it run out after you've introduced the poison.
