I should wait for the engineers to do the math, but I get 40,000lbs x 8.8 ft/s = 352,000 that is figuring you come to a stop, which you usually don't so subtract some from that.

My source kinda comes from this thread http://www.offroadfabnet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6819

Now it will be interesting to see the other answers strap I now own is 212,000lbs shock load/ 70,000 working load and took 40,000 at about 3mph. The ropes I
had to choose from were 170,000lbs and three times the stretch according to the seller.

There is a big difference in force if the tow vehicle stops, bounces back or keeps going. Learned that pulling trees up for my BIL with my '01 Superduty, diesel with a full service tank. Little trees I drove forward and the tree came out as the pickup stopped. Had one big one, popped it to a stop 3 times. Last time put it in 4wd, (on pavement) hit the end and engine had the traction and power to keep full force on my rope and out came the tree, rope was doing all the work.
