Faunsdale, AL | The generator doesn't care about polarity, but the regulator sometimes does.
However, the polarity of the generator from the last time it was run does need to match with the way the battery is installed when the engine is started up. That is the reason for the recommendation to polarize one whenever installing a battery, generator or regulator as well as when it has sat a long time without running and may have lost its 'residual' magnetic field.
If the battery is installed with opposite polarity from the generator, nothing happens until the generator builds up voltage and the regulator cutout relay closes. Then there will be a bad arc across the relay contacts, usually damaging them so that the regulator is shot. | |
