Around here they have open houses every sunday afternoon for houses that are for sale. I like to go sometimes to see what some of them are like. You can get ALOT of ideas from that. Not sure where your at, but you can always drive to a bigger town for more open houses.

You can also do alot of the tearing out and cleaning up as they go, to save yourself alot of money. Anyone can do grunt work, if your not a carpenter.
