SE PA | Sounds like perfect earthworm watching weather! Something else you can do in these conditions is to stomp your foot on the soil. Since earthworms can't hear but can feel vibrations, they will dive into the soil when they feel the stomping vibration and you can literally hear them going back into the soil. Done it many times and something my kids loved to do when they were younger and we went on "earthworm hunts" during damp evenings. I don't know if this is true or not but i heard that earthworms reproduce when they get a certain size and is not associated with time. If so- "size" really does matter!
Below is a picture of 30 earthworms in a square yard. 2 months previous, there was 100% residue cover on this field.
