I usually don't get rid of mine until they start having hardware problems. Reinstalling the OS and getting a "fresh start" can certainly help if the machine has a lot of junk on it. You're right about memory too, 1-2GB is great for XP.

I never throw away an old computer though. I destroy the hard drive and toss that, then put up a free ad on Craigslist for the rest. Never a shortage of people who want them. I'm sure they're taking several machines and building good ones to sell, which is fine with me. Good use of resources.

I did recently order a new laptop from Dell. My current laptop is a bit aged, but part of it is the "new and shiny" factor as well. I'll be keeping this old laptop because it has a serial port. :)
