I have a small screen tv under a cabinet. Rule is no TV during meals but it does help keep up wih news during dinner prep or cleanup.  Your wife may not want TV on during meals. She may not want clutter on the counter.

There are some TV news programs that are useful and not just "gee whiz and gore" trash especially if you have cable. McNeil Lehrer or Charlie Rose or just the local news sports and weather.  Or an occasional football or baseball game. Sell it to her that you could help her in the kitchen rather than being in the other room for the game...

I applaud your interest in keeping up with things. There are small TV's intended for under counter mounting. I mounted a small flat screen to the wall under a counter with a RAM mount so it can be angled about any way that you want and not use any counter space. Maybe you could compromise and give it a try.
