North Liberty and South Bend, Indiana | I agree with the thinking that we should be cautious about hybrid selection after this year and I too can testify to a huge difference of one specific variety according to planting date. However, I can also testify that given the weather we had (or lack of!) I found a diamond in the rough. Regardless of planting date and soil type this variety blew everything away. One particular 40 acre field goes from muck to a sand gravel knob. Pushed well over 200 in the muck at 18% and only dropped to 120 at 17% on the gravel knob. Still pulled 150 on the sand. I'd be very pleased with those numbers in a good year. So, caution is taken on evaluating varieties this year but one that stands out like that one did has to be given a huge amount of respect. And no it is not from any of the major companies, although the genetics are. |
