+1 Gary, it shouldn't be about retaining work for the union/linemen; it should be about keeping the customer happy.
The same analogy could be applied to the custom harvest world. I, or most any other harvester, could easily overbook work, as in take on more than they knew they could do in a timely manner. Would the farmer customer stand for that? Absolutely not. Timeliness in most any line of work is crucial to a satisfied customer. So what I'm saying is, if we had more work scheduled than what we knew we could get done in a timely fashion, we would try to arrange it with or pass it on to other harvester friends, basically whatever it took to get the crop out and keep the farmer happy.
Like far too many others, the bottom line of this whole story boils down to greed.
