Set on hay only, your's is an impossible question to answer. no location thus we don't know of your area takes a 1/2 ton to winter a cow or 3 tons. obviously if you went to feeding baled cornstalks and less hay your winter costs go down a Bunch. "If you think you can, then you likely can. If you think you cannot, your probably right." it's about that simple.
Anybody on here purchase all or a majority of their feed needs?
