For beef cows? Holy crap. I'd agree that a herd average could be lower than 10 years, but I've seen many many cows live longer - but I did overlook the cull option. Hard to figure though, because a cull might bring a higher price than salvage, all depends on why and what she looks like going into the ring.

I could see 4-5 years for a dairy cow, never for beef. Hardly worth the effort, considering she's 2 years by the time you get a calf.
