Subject: RE: Methods to clean the underside of a mower deck

central - east central Minnesota -

hwdcne - 7/17/2012 21:48 I'll admit I'm a little bit of a cheap skate at times. The last big lawn mower I purchased was a ZTS 7500 front deck Craftsman mower. Actually we like the mower but it tends to plug with clippings until finally the blades won't turn and then the Missus tells me the belts are slipping! Today I jacked up the front of the mower and with a pry bar beat and pried out all the caked up residue until everything turned free again. Missus went back to mowing and 1 hour later when I came back in after trashing my ATV fixing a sprinkler she was complaining that the mower was choked up again. Are some mowers worse then others about this problem and if you have a mower that is constantly choking, how do you clean it out? TIA

You have a suburban home owner type mower . . . . that means, you need to be out there mowing the lawn at least 2 times a week - the grass only gets maybe a 1 or 2 inch high when it mowed again. This keeps the clippings moving through our dropping off the bottom of the deck.
When you take that type of deck into tall grass/weeds, there isn't room for the mass to move out from under the deck, clumping and plugging . . . .
One of two things, mow more often and clean more often ..  .
I have enough water pressure on my yard hydrant to wash out all clippings and dirt that has accumlated on my bushhog - So rig up a sprayer for the graden hose the wife can run over and with the mower deck on and water on - kind of self clean . . . . . .
Good luck - those little things can get on a guys nerves, after while ~
