Saronville NE
Cause you can limit feed em that way, cows will just stand and eat and eat and eat, but dont need all that to stay in good condition, plus they pull all the lower quality out and waste it. I hate bale feeders, only use em to start calves on to wean, but after they get on feed everything thru a feedwagon, lots less waste and limit feed em. I fed cows in a bunk last winter 7-8lbs of corn/DDG mix and bout 30lbs of good grass/straw/cornstalks/ bean stubble/crp hay and a hint of alfalfa and kept em in good condition just ask the guy off NAT on here who bought em. If you put a poor quality hay bale in a feeder for 20 cows they will go thru a bale a day or close to it, when a 1500lb bale would last em 2 1/2-3 days if limit fed.
