Yorkshire UK | You probably don't actually need the workgroup at all, XP is difficult to join an W7 workgroup, if shut that off and just share required folders they should see each other.
However it sounds like the XP isn't confirmed connected to the router?
Is the ethernet working at all?
I have an older XP desktop which apparently was damaged by lightning so it can only connect with a USB wifi dongle.
If the XP machine doesn't need to be XP for some reason you could consider giving it a new lease of life by installing W7 if it's got a min of 1GB Ram.
