We currently have 100 ewes. These are all one source first time lambing but I learned the hard way, we bred them toooooooo soon. They lambed out at 12 months of age. I'm new to the sheep industry so we are learning a lot while holding down a fulltime job. These ewe are a 50/50 blend of rideau arcott and polled dorset bred to a purebred texel ram. Average birth weights on singles are 10 - 12 lbs and with the twins they averaged 7 - 8 lbs. They are grazing on a grass blend with 5% alfalfa. I just finished cutting this paddock cause the grass went to seed which the sheep don't like.
I hope this answer some of your questions if not keep asking.
Thanks
Neil
I think that is the first time I have ever heard a farmer in Ontario refer to a field as a paddock. Usually hear that from the Australians.
BTW, nice pics! |
