Sheep. Or cattle. The way machinery is going, the amount you need to do crops is insurmountable if starting out. You need way less capital purchases for livestock than for grain. WAY less. Weather is WAY less of a factor, dry or wet you can buy feed. Every cloud that comes by is not the distinct threat, frost don't kill cows or sheep, hail may dent 'em, but not wipe 'em out. At the beginning of the cycle year, you can have say 400 ewes, and expect say 600 plus lambs, and pencil from there. With crops, you can use up seventy three pencils, it really does not matter, as weather can kick you of the paper real fast.

In other words, with livestock, there is way less risk, in my mind. Cheaper land generally as well.
