Cullom, Illinois | I have no actual data to back me up but don't you think gains would have to be better. Especially on those cold wet Feb/March days when it rains for a week straight. Or last July when it was 90+ degrees for two weeks. And what about the manure. In an outside lot you don't recover the runoff but in a pit you have some value in the manure as fertilizer. Or even in a deep bedded barn. I'm not saying you will see huge differences in gain. My guess would be 5-10%. Is this enough to justify a $700/head confinement barn? I'm not sure. Maybe someone has made the comparison. I have Nebraska data that says yes but it's from twenty years ago. Nordman's in northern Illinois fed cattle both ways for years. | |
