Which NMEA messages have you set as output and at what output rate? If you haven't set any, it's not going to work. If you have set too many different messages, they won't fit in 4800 bps and as a result they will be rejected. In both cases, it looks like the GPS is not working while in fact the serial communication (or lack thereof) is the real problem.
