Glad it was not something seriously broken. I tried to replicate your issues on my iPhone - the speech thing is part of accessibility settings, but could not find anything that would cause the black screen. Figured that a restore would no doubt cure both issues unless there was a hardware problem - and Apple's products are NOT immune to them.
