Subject: RE: Five tips for diagnosing memory problems

Wyoming

When I was a youngster, we had ECC memory in mini's and mainframes. Detected all single-bit errors and corrected them, detected the majority of double-bit errors. We never had to wonder if we had a memory problem, it was right there in the system log. "memory error," and it would tell us the physical address, the bus slot, the card and bank of memory. Take the system down that night, replace the card, back up in 15 minutes and no more problem.

Now people have to wonder "Golly, I wonder why my system suddenly blue-screened?" as they wonder "I hope it didn't corrupt my files..."

Ah, progress.
