If the phone is awake, it plays automatically. If the phone is asleep, you get a notification - and as soon as you wake the phone up, it will play. You have the option of playing the messages through speaker or earpiece.
If you were using this app for farming to communicate with others say during harvest, you'd want to keep the phone awake which would require keeping it plugged into a charger.
