Sometimes we chat the entire trip, and sometimes we barely say 10 words. It kinda of depends on the destination, and what has been going on in the past few days. I tend to stay more alert if I listen to a ball game or some type of talk radio (which she doesn't listen to either very often), so she will read her kindle and listen to her music while we drive sometimes.
