I'm not a fan of laptop keyboards, but like all the other things they offer- BTW, I do not have a laptop. My desktop is about the same age as yours, and I will be rebuilding it again, soon. It's showing it's age as well, but still spec'd out to compete on a 'good' day.
As far as monitors go, you can get them pretty cheaply. Target has nice ones, or shop online for an even better deal. Figure out what size you want and go from there... Shop whole systems while you're there-It might be a good option.
If you have not used a laptop before, I'd suggest trying one out at a store before making up your mind. If you like it, it's a good option as well.
